Monkeys relaxing at Edinburgh Zoo

Monkeys relaxing at Edinburgh Zoo by Ed OKeeffe

I’m not sure if these are Gorillas or Monkeys but the live in Edinburgh Zoo. The zoo is on an 82 acre site on the side quite a steep hill. It is a bus journey from the city centre but well worth the trip. I thought this was an interesting view of the monkeys and the Edinburgh suburbs in the background. Its a shame I didn’t have a longer lens, this was taken on my compact camera back in July 2006 and was cropped in Photoshop . With a longer lens I would have focus on the single monkey facing me and not included the other ones with there backs to the camera. I definitely recommend a trip to Edinburgh Zoo, and am hoping to go back next time I’m in the area.

Glass roof at Royal Exchange Theatre

Glass roof at Royal Exchange Theatre by Ed OKeeffe

Last Saturday my Uncle and his family came up to visit me from Reading and wanted to look around the city of Manchester. Whilst finding somewhere to eat it was suggested that we went to the cafe within the Royal Exchange. This is a large Victorian building which was traditionally used for cotton trading up until 1968. I had walked past many times but never actually gone inside. The photograph above shows the inside of the colourful dome, but the most interesting part for me is the theatre itself. Just below the view on the picture is a seven sided steel and glass module at squats in the main hall of the building and looks like a space ship. Inside is the round theatre with seating for about 400 people. Even though there was light shining through this large glass dome it was still very dark in terms of photography so I will have to go back with a tripod and a wide angle lens, to get some images of the actual theatre itself. It definitely wasn’t what I had expected and is worth a visit to anyone who hasn’t seen it before.

Penguins diving into pool at Edinburgh Zoo

Penguins diving into pool at Edinburgh Zoo by Ed O'Keeffe

The image above was taken back in July 2006 whilst exploring Edinburgh Zoo. I’m not sure what type of Penguins these are but they have two large areas for them. There are a few dozen of them swimming and waddling around their enclosure. Animals are notoriously very difficult to take pictures of, as they are usually moving and quite unpredictable. I’m pleased I caught this penguin in mid air as he was diving into the pool, but I feel I was stood in the wrong place. Standing 10 feet to the left would have meant he wouldn’t appear as if he was diving out of the photograph. It isn’t very often I go to zoos though and seeing the penguins lining up in single file to jump of the board into the water was a great thing to watch. Although, it wasn’t very cute when the one behind on the board turned around, excreted into the water and then dived into it…nice.
